Application crash via unbounded recursive JSON parsing
Published Jun 14, 2023 · Updated Jan 3, 2025
Stack exhaustion in pbjson 0.4.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash applications by submitting deeply nested JSON input. JSONObjectReader.readJSON sends deeply nested arrays through GetJSONArray and GetJSONValueRecursive without limiting recursion depth. Exploitation requires an application to parse attacker-supplied JSON; exhausting the Java stack crashes that application or its parsing process.
