Application crash via unbounded recursive JSON parsing
Published Jun 14, 2023 · Updated Jan 6, 2025
Stack exhaustion in ph-json 11.0.4 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash applications that parse deeply nested JSON input. JsonParser._readArray recursively invokes _readValue for each nested array without enforcing a depth limit, exhausting the Java call stack. The condition requires an application to pass attacker-controlled JSON to the parser; the demonstrated consequence is an unhandled StackOverflowError that interrupts the application.
