Service interruption via unbounded recursive JSON parsing
Published Jun 14, 2023 · Updated Jan 6, 2025
Denial of service in mjson 1.4.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash parsers by submitting deeply nested JSON arrays. Json.Reader.readArray recursively processes each nested array without enforcing a depth limit, exhausting the Java call stack and raising StackOverflowError. Any network service that passes untrusted JSON to Json.read is exposed, and successful exploitation interrupts parsing and associated service handling.
