Arbitrary code execution via unchecked buffer copy
Published Aug 17, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
A buffer overflow in the SetupUtility driver in Lenovo Notebook firmware allows local users with elevated privileges to execute arbitrary code. The driver copies input into a buffer without checking that the destination is large enough, allowing memory beyond the buffer to be overwritten. Reaching the faulty driver requires local access and elevated privileges; successful exploitation permits arbitrary code execution on the notebook.
