Application crash via unreachable token formatter
Published Jun 5, 2023 · Updated Jan 8, 2025
Denial of service in xml-rs 0.8.9 through 0.8.13 allows remote attackers to crash applications via malformed XML input. The Token Display implementation routes an unexpected MarkupDeclarationStart token to unreachable!() while formatting a parser error, causing a panic instead of returning an error. Exploitation requires an application using the crate to parse attacker-controlled XML; the panic interrupts that application without reported data exposure or modification.
