Root code execution via unchecked cmsCli_authenticate stack copy
Published May 3, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Stack-based buffer overflow in NETGEAR RAX30 firmware 1.0.9.92_1 allows network-adjacent attackers to execute arbitrary code as root. The cmsCli_authenticate routine does not validate user-supplied data length before copying it into a fixed-length stack buffer in a shared library used by telnetd. The service listens on TCP port 23 by default; ZDI reports no authentication is required, while NETGEAR says exploitation requires local-network access and router administrator credentials.
