Device bricking via invalid firmware signature handling
Published Jul 13, 2023 · Updated Oct 30, 2024
Improper firmware signature verification in Belkin Wemo WiFi Smart Plug WSP080 1.2 allows attackers to brick the device with crafted firmware. During a mobile-app-initiated Device Firmware Update, the plug processes a firmware binary despite an invalid signature; changing one byte makes it stop responding. The demonstrated path requires pairing the plug with the Wemo app and substituting the firmware URL or binary during delivery, after which the plug cannot be reset or detected by the app.
