Broker crash via undersized SUBSCRIBE field
Published Jun 6, 2023 · Updated Jan 8, 2025
Heap buffer overflow in NanoMQ 0.17.2 allows remote attackers to crash the MQTT broker by sending a malformed SUBSCRIBE message. The nmq_subinfo_decode path reaches copyn_str with fewer than two bytes remaining, and copyn_str reads a two-byte string length without rejecting the undersized buffer. No authentication or user interaction is required; successful exploitation interrupts broker availability without reported data disclosure or modification.
