Account access via reusable password hashes
Published Jun 15, 2023 · Updated Dec 12, 2024
Broken authentication in STARFACE 7.3.0.10 and earlier allows remote attackers with a user's SHA512 password hash to assume that account. With Active Directory login disabled, the default web login builds the secret value from the username, public session values, and SHA512(password), while the server accepts that derived value without requiring the cleartext password; the REST login follows the same pattern. Exploitation requires a valid username and its database-stored password hash, after which the web interface returns a session and the REST API returns a token with that account's privileges.
