5G service interruption via malformed RRC Setup
Published Dec 5, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Improper input validation in Snapdragon modem firmware allows physically proximate attackers to disable 5G with a malformed RRC Setup message. The modem accepts an invalid pdcch-Config element in the RRC Setup flow instead of rejecting it, leaving the device unable to maintain or restore its 5G connection. Exploitation requires a rogue 5G base station within radio range and causes a transient service interruption or downgrade rather than data disclosure or modification.
