Reachable assertion in MediaTek 5G Modem NR15 through NR17 allows physically proximate attackers to reboot the modem via a malformed RRC message. A malicious gNB sends a truncated RRC Connection Setup whose altered physicalCellGroupConfig fields cause encoding errors and a null-pointer dereference. The pre-authentication attack requires radio-range access and a rogue 5G base station; repeated triggers interrupt 3G, 4G, and 5G service.
