Audit evasion via dollar-suffixed account names
Published Aug 7, 2023 · Updated Oct 15, 2024
Audit detection bypass in Zoho ManageEngine ADAudit Plus 7.1.1 allows attackers to hide Windows account activity with a $ suffix. The event analysis component omits a dollar-suffixed user and that user's Windows events from activity reports, apparently treating the name as a system account. Creating or renaming an account requires corresponding Windows account-management rights; Zoho disputes the issue as expected behavior, and the demonstrated consequence is loss of audit visibility.
