CVE-2023-32680Network attack vector

Sandbox escape via unauthorized SQL snippet editing

Published May 18, 2023 · Updated Feb 12, 2025

Authorization bypass in affected Metabase releases allows remote authenticated users to expand access to data restricted by a sandbox. SQL-snippet edit paths in the API and model-metadata UI fail to require membership in a group with native-query editing permission before saving attacker-controlled snippet changes. A low-privileged user must be able to edit a snippet referenced by the query that builds that user's sandbox; changing its restriction logic exposes otherwise inaccessible data.
