Arbitrary network requests via default socket access
Published May 11, 2023 · Updated Nov 3, 2025
Improper network access control in LuaTeX before 1.17.0 allows attackers to make arbitrary network requests through crafted documents. The Lua initialization path loads and exposes the LuaSocket library by default instead of requiring explicit socket enablement. Compiling an untrusted document with default settings is sufficient to connect to attacker-selected internet or intranet endpoints.
