CVE-2023-3255Network attack vector

Authenticated service hang via clipboard decompression loop

Published Sep 13, 2023 · Updated Nov 8, 2025

Denial of service in the QEMU VNC server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and 9 allows remote authenticated users to hang a virtual machine. vnc_client_cut_text_ext passes attacker-controlled compressed clipboard data to inflate_buffer, whose wrong exit condition keeps looping after zlib returns Z_STREAM_END. Reachability requires an authenticated VNC session capable of sending clipboard data; the resulting CPU loop interrupts the affected QEMU service without reported data access or modification.
