SYSTEM privilege escalation via redirected folder creation
Published Jun 23, 2023 · Updated Dec 5, 2024
Incorrect authorization in Apple iTunes for Windows before 12.12.9 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges through MSI repair. The installer creates SC Info as SYSTEM but grants all users full control, allowing its creation to be redirected through junctions. A low-privileged user must delete the folder, prepare mount-point and symbolic-link redirection, and trigger an MSI repair; successful exploitation permits arbitrary code execution as SYSTEM.
