SYSTEM code execution via writable installer command file
Published Sep 6, 2023 · Updated Sep 26, 2024
Local privilege escalation in Wacom Windows Driver 6.3.45 allows local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM through PrefUtil.exe. During preference restoration, SYSTEM-level Remove.exe reads attacker-controlled arguments from the user-writable C:\Windows\Temp\WacomInstallI.txt file and can append a crafted command to Installer.dat before executing it. A low-privileged Windows session can trigger the restore flow without user interaction, yielding complete SYSTEM-level code execution.
