Security warning bypass via crafted URL
Published Jul 11, 2023 · Updated Jan 12, 2026
Security feature bypass in Microsoft Windows SmartScreen allows remote attackers to suppress Open File warnings through a crafted URL. SmartScreen accepts the specially formulated URL without displaying the expected Open File security dialog, allowing untrusted content to launch without that reputation-based warning. A user must open the crafted URL, and CISA records active exploitation of the bypass.
