Privilege escalation via unconstrained tar extraction paths
Published Jun 13, 2023 · Updated Jan 1, 2025
Improper input validation in Microsoft .NET 7.0 and Visual Studio 2022 allows local users to elevate privileges through crafted tar extraction. TarFile.ExtractToDirectory fails to confine an archive entry path to the caller-supplied destination, allowing writes outside that directory. Exploitation requires low privileges and a privileged application that extracts an attacker-controlled tar archive; resulting file changes can compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
