Server resource access via unvalidated PHAR path
Published Oct 16, 2023 · Updated Sep 16, 2024
PHAR deserialization in NextGEN Gallery before 3.39 allows remote authenticated users to access server resources via gallery edits. The gallery_edit task accepts an attacker-controlled extra_data tmp_name using the phar:// wrapper and passes it into upload processing without validating the resource path. Administrator access, PHP 7.4 or earlier, a crafted PHAR already on the server, and a usable gadget are required; the demonstrated consequence is object deserialization.
