CVE-2023-31438Public exploit

Log truncation concealment via unchecked epoch gaps

Published Jun 13, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Forward-secure log-sealing bypass in systemd 253 allows local users to truncate sealed journal files without detection. The journal verifier accepts a later authentication tag when its epoch skips deleted epochs, while sealing can resume after the file is truncated. Exploitation requires full control of a host with forward-secure sealing enabled; removed historical entries then pass subsequent integrity verification.
