Root compromise via insecure firmware download
Published Jul 11, 2023 · Updated Nov 12, 2024
Improper certificate validation in BlueMark Innovations BV DroneScout ds230 firmware 20211210-1627 through 20230329-1042 grants attackers root access. The /root/update.sh script passes --insecure to curl, accepts any TLS certificate, and installs a downloaded archive whose attacker-provided checksum is trusted. Exploitation requires a man-in-the-middle position and an operator to run the manual updater; the malicious archive can replace executables and configuration.
