CVE-2023-30609Network attack vector

Cross-site scripting via unescaped plaintext search highlighting

Published Apr 25, 2023 · Updated Feb 3, 2025

Cross-site scripting in matrix-react-sdk before 3.71.0 allows remote authenticated users to execute script through search results. The bodyToHtml highlighting path passes an unescaped plaintext message body through BaseHighlighter.applyHighlights and into dangerouslySetInnerHTML. A user must search for the attacker-chosen message; the default content security policy permits script execution through resources from recaptcha.net or gstatic.com.
