CVE-2023-30577Public exploit

Root command execution via runtar option injection

Published Jul 26, 2023 · Updated Nov 4, 2025

Argument injection in AMANDA before 3.5.4 allows local users with backup-account access to execute commands as root through runtar. The SUID runtar wrapper accepts a non-argument option beginning with --exclude, then permits a following GNU tar option that names a script or binary. Access to the unprivileged backup account is required; exploitation runs the supplied program with root permissions, enabling full host compromise.
