CVE-2023-30571

Local file tampering via process-wide umask race

Published May 29, 2023 · Updated Jan 14, 2025

Race condition in libarchive through 3.6.2 allows local users to cause creation of world-writable directories during concurrent writes. In archive_write_disk_posix.c, overlapping archive_write_disk_header() calls change the process-wide umask to zero and restore it in an unsafe order, leaving it at zero. Concurrent use of the POSIX disk-writer API is required; resulting 0777 directories let low-privileged local users delete or rename contained files.
