Host code execution via unsanitized proxy exception
Published Apr 17, 2023 · Updated Feb 5, 2025
Sandbox escape in Patrik Simek vm2 before 3.9.17 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in the host context via a crafted exception. In transformer-generated handling for destructuring catch clauses, handleException calls a Proxy-controlled getPrototypeOf trap that can throw an unsanitized host exception, exposing the host Function constructor. Exploitation requires an attacker-controlled JavaScript execution primitive inside a vm2 sandbox and grants the sandboxed code the host process's authority.
