Host code execution via writable NAND partition
Published Apr 28, 2023 · Updated Jan 31, 2025
Incorrect authorization in magicJack A921 firmware before 1.4 allows physically proximate attackers to execute code on an attached host. A hidden NAND partition remains writable despite the software volume appearing read-only, permitting the bundled application to be replaced with a lookalike. Physical access to the USB device and subsequent execution of the substituted application are required; the demonstrated result is arbitrary host command execution.
