Local compiler crash via unchecked SortOp parent
Published May 5, 2023 · Updated Jan 29, 2025
Denial of service in LLVM MLIR allows local users to crash mlir-opt by processing crafted MLIR with the sparse-buffer-rewrite pass. The matchAndRewriteSortOp routine assumes its SortOp has a func::FuncOp parent and continues with an empty insertion point when that assumption fails. Exploitation requires local execution of mlir-opt against specially structured input; the documented consequence is termination of the compiler process, not code execution or data exposure.
