Persistent app crashes via unrestricted database inserts
Published Jun 9, 2023 · Updated Jan 6, 2025
Incorrect authorization in FlightAware 5.8.0 for Android allows attackers to persistently crash it using a local malicious app. The exposed FlightAwareContent provider accepts unrestricted inserts into the airlines database, which the app loads into memory at startup. A malicious app on the same device can repeatedly insert oversized values until an out-of-memory error crashes FlightAware, including on later launches.
