CVE-2023-2961

Service crash via unchecked MNG size multiplication

Published Jun 6, 2023 · Updated Jan 7, 2025

Improper input validation in AdvanceCOMP before 2.5 allows local users to crash advmng by processing a crafted MNG file. The MNG header reader multiplies attacker-controlled width, pixel-size, and height values without overflow checks, then allocates a wrapped buffer size. A local low-privileged user must cause advmng to read the malformed file; the resulting invalid memory access terminates that utility and interrupts its current recompression task.
