Command execution via unchanged desktop-file extension
Published Jun 2, 2023 · Updated Jan 10, 2025
Improper download handling in Firefox before 112, Firefox ESR before 102.10, and Thunderbird before 102.10 allows remote attackers to run commands. The file-handling code saves the executable desktop-entry extension unchanged instead of appending .download, letting a file manager interpret attacker-controlled Exec content. Execution requires a user to open the download on a Linux distribution whose file manager launches .desktop entries; other platforms are unaffected.
