Memory corruption via prematurely accessed weak maps
Published Jun 2, 2023 · Updated Jan 9, 2025
Memory corruption in Mozilla Firefox-family products and Thunderbird allows remote attackers to cause a crash via crafted content. During compacting garbage collection, finalization-observer edge processing accesses weak maps before tracing updates their relocated entries, leaving stale references to moved cells. Triggering requires attacker-controlled JavaScript and user interaction with the content; the published result is a client crash and memory corruption, with no demonstrated code execution.
