Code execution via invalid HTML comment sanitization
Published Apr 20, 2023 · Updated Feb 4, 2025
Cross-site scripting in XWiki Commons allows attackers to run JavaScript when a privileged user views crafted HTML cleaned in restricted mode. DefaultHTMLCleaner preserves malformed HTML comments, allowing parser confusion to expose attacker-supplied tags and event handlers that were treated as comment text. Affected releases begin with 4.2-milestone-1, and exploitation requires a privileged viewer; the script can execute server-side code with programming rights.
