Unauthorized account creation via miscontextualized template
Published Apr 18, 2023 · Updated Feb 5, 2025
Improper access control in XWiki Platform before 14.10.1 allows remote attackers to create accounts despite disabled registration. A template macro invoked through the CKEditor HTML-conversion sheet renders distribution/firstadminuser.wiki in the wrong context and exposes account creation. Guest view access to any document is sufficient; releases from 14.5 also require a valid CSRF token, and successful use creates and signs in a chosen account.
