Patient message impersonation via unchecked sender identity
Published May 27, 2023 · Updated Jan 14, 2025
Missing authorization in OpenEMR before 7.0.1 allows remote authenticated users to send portal messages under another patient's identity. The portal/messaging/handle_note.php handler accepted posted sender_id and sender_name values without comparing them with the authenticated portal session and patient record. A patient-portal account is required; exploitation changes message attribution but does not grant broader account privileges.
