CVE-2023-29401Public exploitNetwork attack vector

File extension spoofing via unescaped attachment filename

Published Jun 8, 2023 · Updated Jan 6, 2025

Improper input validation in Gin before 1.9.1 allows remote attackers to spoof a downloaded file's name through a crafted attachment filename. Context.FileAttachment inserts an ASCII filename into a quoted Content-Disposition parameter without escaping double quotes, so a quote terminates the intended value and injects a different name or parameter. Exposure requires an application to supply an attacker-controlled filename and a user to download the response; the demonstrated consequence is file-name or extension spoofing, not server-side file access.
