Security-feature bypass via remote-path misclassification

Published May 9, 2023 · Updated Jul 10, 2025

Security feature bypass in Microsoft Windows MSHTML allows remote attackers to evade URL zone checks through a crafted remote path. MapUrlToZone calls CreateUri, which converts the crafted device-style UNC path into a local-looking URL while CreateFile still routes the original path to a remote SMB server. No authentication or user interaction is required; in the Outlook attack path, the bypass permits an unsolicited message to trigger an SMB connection and expose an NTLM credential hash.
