CVE-2023-2917Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Remote code execution via synchronization file upload

Published Aug 17, 2023 · Updated Oct 8, 2024

Path traversal in affected Rockwell Automation ThinManager ThinServer releases allows remote attackers to upload arbitrary files. ThinServer.exe accepts the file_name path from unauthenticated type 38 SYNC_MSG_SEND_FILE_BACKGROUND messages and writes fdata without confining the destination to an allowed directory. Network access to TCP port 2031 is sufficient; overwriting an executable with attacker-controlled content can lead to code execution.
