Buffer overflow in Mdadm Project mdadm before mdadm-4.2-rc2 allows local privileged users to gain privileges via Intel platform discovery. The platform-intel.c device-scanning code builds sysfs paths with unbounded sprintf into fixed-size buffers, allowing oversized device names or paths to overwrite adjacent memory. Exploitation requires privileged local access and can compromise process integrity and availability while crossing into a higher-privilege context.
