CVE-2023-28502Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Unauthenticated root code execution via unbounded credential copies

Published Mar 29, 2023 · Updated Feb 18, 2025

Stack-based buffer overflows in Rocket Software UniData and UniVerse for Linux allow remote attackers to execute code as root. In udadmin_server, the main routine copies attacker-supplied username and encoded-password strings into fixed-size stack buffers with u2strcpy without bounds checks. A default UniRPC installation exposes the udadmin or udadmin82 service through TCP port 31438 before authentication, so successful exploitation grants full control under the root service account.
