Terminal output manipulation via unescaped control characters
Published Mar 16, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Terminal escape injection in sudoreplay in Sudo before 1.9.13 allows local users to alter terminal output through crafted log data. List mode appends user-controlled command and session fields without encoding control characters, causing a terminal to interpret them instead of displaying them as data. Exploitation requires a crafted sudo I/O-log entry and a person to view the affected listing, enabling deceptive terminal content rather than privilege escalation or service interruption.
