Privilege escalation via unchecked Windows path separators
Published Mar 22, 2023 · Updated Feb 25, 2025
Path traversal in MinIO before RELEASE.2023-03-20T20-16-18Z on Windows allows remote authenticated users to create an administrator account. The hasBadPathComponent function splits object names only on forward slashes, so backslashes reach Windows path handling and place objects outside the authorized bucket. A credential limited to PutObject in one bucket is sufficient; successful exploitation crosses bucket authorization boundaries and creates an administrative identity.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
Public exploit references
No public exploit references are available in this record.
Labels summarize the accepted research assessment. They do not indicate a test against your environment.
