Image disclosure via untruncated overwrite data
Published Jun 13, 2023 · Updated Jan 1, 2025
Information disclosure in Microsoft Snipping Tool and Snip & Sketch allows attackers to recover cropped image content from shared files. When a cropped image overwrites its source file, the save path writes the shorter result without truncating residual bytes after the new PNG IEND marker. Exploitation requires an affected user to overwrite an existing image and an attacker to obtain the resulting file; recovery is limited to residual original image data.
