Remote crash via malformed NSEC synthesis
Published Jun 21, 2023 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Denial of service in ISC BIND 9 SPE 9.16.8-S1 through 9.16.41-S1 and 9.18.11-S1 through 9.18.15-S1 allows remote attackers to crash named. The fault lies in named's RFC 8198 NSEC synthesis path, but ISC has not disclosed the erroneous operation that processes the malformed record. Reachability requires DNSSEC validation and synth-from-dnssec; the option defaults to yes in 9.18-S but requires explicit activation in earlier affected releases.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=9.16.8-S1 <=9.16.41-S1
