Environment-value disclosure via suggested filename expansion
Published Jun 2, 2023 · Updated Jan 9, 2025
Path traversal in Mozilla Firefox before 111 and Firefox ESR and Thunderbird before 102.9 allows remote attackers to expose environment values. The Save As filename sanitizer permits percent-delimited environment-variable names in a suggested extension, so Windows expands them under the current user's context. Exploitation requires a Windows user to open Save As for an attacker-controlled download and then upload the saved file, revealing the expanded value.
