CVE-2023-28158Network attack vector

Administrator escalation via improperly HTML-escaped upload coordinates

Published Mar 29, 2023 · Updated Feb 13, 2025

Stored XSS in Apache Archiva 2.0.0 through 2.2.9 allows remote authenticated users to gain administrator privileges via crafted upload paths. DefaultFileUploadService.save() applies JavaScript escaping instead of HTML escaping to upload coordinates and accepts angle brackets and ampersands that become stored directory names rendered in the web UI. A user with upload permission must save the crafted coordinates and an administrator must view the stored content, allowing the injected script to act with that administrator's session privileges.
