Debugger crash via out-of-bounds section name
Published Apr 4, 2023 · Updated Feb 14, 2025
Denial of service in Eteran edb-debugger 1.3.0 allows local users to crash the debugger by loading a malformed ELF file. collect_symbols adds each untrusted sh_name offset to section_strings and calls strcmp without checking that the resulting pointer remains inside the mapped file. Low-privilege local access and control of an ELF input are required; successful exploitation terminates the debugger without reported data disclosure or modification.
