CVE-2023-27730Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Runtime crash via overwritten Error object pointer

Published Apr 9, 2023 · Updated Feb 11, 2025

Out-of-bounds read in NGINX NJS 0.7.10 allows remote attackers to crash the runtime by evaluating crafted JavaScript. The njs_error_to_string2 function lets a nonprimitive Error.name lookup overwrite vm->retval, then passes the resulting primitive value to njs_object_property as an object pointer, causing njs_lvlhsh_find to read through an invalid address. Reachability requires an NJS execution path that evaluates attacker-influenced code or dumps the crafted Error object; the demonstrated consequence is a process crash, with no shown data disclosure or modification.
