CVE-2023-27704Public exploit

Local application hang via catastrophic regex backtracking

Published Apr 12, 2023 · Updated Feb 10, 2025

Regular expression denial of service in voidtools Everything before 1.4.1.1022 allows local users to hang the application via a crafted search. The regex-enabled search box evaluates a nested-quantifier pattern such as ^([\w]+)+$ through excessive backtracking, driving CPU use above 90%. Regex mode must be enabled and the pattern entered locally; CPU exhaustion leaves Everything unresponsive, with no reported host crash.
