Authenticated code execution via PHAR deserialization
Published Mar 22, 2023 · Updated Feb 26, 2025
Unsafe PHAR deserialization in LightCMS 1.3.7 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code through image handling. fetchImageFile passes attacker-controlled remote content to Image::make, whose URL decoder invokes file_get_contents on a phar:// path and deserializes uploaded PHAR metadata through a Laravel gadget chain. Exploitation requires backend image-upload and remote-image-fetch access, and the demonstrated consequence is command execution as the web application.
